The Wagon Wheel is Tumbleweed's chainring for Shimano direct mount cranksets that is designed for everything except for 12 speed Shimano HG+ chains. They love Shimano cranks and have been using the Hollowtech 2 design for almost 20 years, but they wanted the option to run them with other drivetrains.
Tumbleweed think the crank design is great for touring since preload is easily adjustable and you can remove the cranks with just an allen wrench and a small plastic preload cap tool, and the 24mm steel spindle is strong and stiff. The only problem is that there is limited aftermarket chainring support for direct mount chainrings for these cranks.
As with all of our products, they designed this chainring specifically and primarily for a need within the ecosystem of our own builds, and they are simply making some extras available for people who might find them useful. They are not planning to produce rings for other crank standards, they might eventually do a couple other tooth or offset options that make sense for our bikes though.
They currently only have one option for tooth count at 32 teeth, and one offset at +3mm, which is the same offset as standard shimano rings and will give you the same chainline as stock.
They run these on our Prospector Rohloff builds with a 9 speed chain and a super boost Shimano crankset like the M6130, M7130 or M8130, and on their Stargazer and Sunliner builds with a 12 speed SRAM Eagle chain and Shimano boost crankset like the M6100, M7100 or M8100.
They have two options for materials, a 7075 aluminum alloy that weighs 60 grams, and a 304 stainless steel that weighs 150 grams. The tradeoff for the extra weight of the stainless ring is longer life. One of their sponsored riders has nearly 5000 miles of loaded touring on a stainless ring and it still looks brand new.
